If you’re at a point in your situation when you’re dealing with trying to file a life insurance claim, chances are pretty good that you’re struggling. You’re probably dealing with overwhelming emotions, grief, and a whole range of other feelings. The last thing you want to do right now is have to argue with an insurance company.
Still, it happens. Insurance companies are in business to make money, and sometimes there will be circumstances that lead them to deny a claim. When this happens, you need to be ready. You need to also recognize that an initial denial isn’t a final answer, and that there are some things you can do in order to try to appeal the decision.
- Get in touch. The first step is to contact the life insurance company. Find out why they’ve denied the claim. It may be something as simple as incorrectly filed paperwork, and you may just need to fill out a form in order to resolve the issue. On the other hand, it could be much more than that, but you won’t know until you call. You need to get a clear understanding of what you’re up against.
- Gather your documentation. Next, you need to get all of the relevant information and paperwork together. Get proof that the term life insurance policy was paid up and that the account was in good standing at the time of death. Make sure you locate a copy of the insurance policy, and collect any other records, such as medical records or accident reports as well.
- Discover the appeals process. From here, you need to learn the insurance company’s appeals process. Each life insurance company is different in this regard, so you’ll either need to call the company again or do some other research.
- Submit your appeal. Submitting your appeal letter is probably the most important step in this process. Make sure you submit the appeal quickly, as many companies may have a time limit for appeals. This can vary from state to state, as well. In the appeal, stick to the facts. State the reasons why you believe the claim is valid, and cite any paperwork or documentation that’s relevant to your argument. Save a copy of the appeal for your own records, as well.
- Follow up. Call the insurance company and check on the status of your appeal. It can take a while for an appeal investigation to take place, but it doesn’t hurt to call and see what kind of progress the company is making.
